BERNARDUS COMPOSTELLANUS ANTIQUUS. — Spaniard, professor of canon law. In 1208 he extracted from the registers of Innocent III the decretals of the first ten years of that Pope’s pontificate, adding one from the eleventh year, and arranged them in a compilation, which he organized systematically and which was subsequently called the Compilatio romana. This collection was later revoked with the publication, on 28 December 1210, of the so-called Compilatio tertia, commissioned from Pietro Beneventano by Pope Innocent himself and containing the decretals of the first twelve years of his pontificate (1198–1210). He is also credited with the Notabilia in I et II Compilationem.
