BERNARDUS COMPOSTELLANUS JUNIOR. - Spanish decretalist, b. at Vernant (whence the nickname Brigantius, by which he is also sometimes designated).

He seems to be identifiable with the magister Bernardus Hispanus, mentioned in the registers of Urban IV (1261-64)

as «cappellanus noster, partibus datus audito» (Registri Urbani IV, nos. 1049-1100; E. Cerchiari, Cappellarii Papae et apostolicae sedis etc., II [Rome 1920], p. 12, n. 41).

After the death of the pontiff Alexander IV (1254-61) he produced a commentary on the first book of the decretals of Gregory IX: Lectura aurea super libro primo decretalium, (in Perillustrium tam veterum quam recentiorum in libros decretalium aurea Commentaria, I, Venice 1588). He also wrote a commentary on the Novellae constitutiones of Innocent IV and the Notabilia et Cassus super quisque libros decretalium, the latter work remaining unfinished.
