BERTRAND, PIERRE (Bertrandus, Petrus). — French decretalist, d. 23 June 1348 or 24 June 1349. He studied at the University of Orléans. He taught canon law at Avignon, Montpellier, Orléans and finally at Paris. Bishop in various sees in France from 1320, he was then created cardinal in 1331 by JOHN XXII for the vigour he displayed at the assembly of Vincennes (1329) in upholding the authority of ecclesiastical jurisdiction against the protest of Pierre de Cugnières; indeed, he wrote against the latter: Libellus P. B. super iurisdictione ecclesiastica et temporali. More noteworthy still is his other work: De origine jurisdictionum (Paris 1551), which lays the foundations, as it were, of ecclesiastical public law.
