Beveregius, Guillelmus (Beveridge, William)

BEVEREGIUS, GUILLELMUS (BEVERIDGE WILLIAM). – English Protestant theologian and Orientalist; b. at Banow (Leicestershire) in 1638, d. 3 March 1708. He belonged to a family of clergymen and himself entered Holy Orders. In 1704 he was appointed bishop of St-Asaph. Of his many writings, the following two treatments of sources are of interest to canon law: Synodicon seu Pandectae conciliorum et apostolorum, ab ecclesia graeca receptorum (2 vols., Oxford 1672), in which he maintains the authenticity of the collection of the Canons of the Twelve Apostles, and Codex canonum ecclesiae primitivae vindicatus ac illustratus (London 1678, Amsterdam 1697).
