BERTRANDO del POGGETTO (BERTRAND DU POUJET). - Born at Castelnau-Montattier (Lot) ca. 1280, died February 1, 1352, cardinal bishop of Ostia. He owed his rapid career to John XXII, of whom he was once falsely believed to be the natural son, and who, shortly after his election (1316), promoted him cardinal of the title of St. Marcellus. The Pontiff, aiming to raise up the Guelph party in Italy during the vacancy of the Empire (he did not recognize Louis the Bavarian as legitimate), sent B. to Italy as legate, especially against the Visconti of Milan. When the attempt to bend them by arms proved vain, since B. did not have sufficient forces, he resorted to spiritual penalties, excommunicating the Visconti and laying an interdict on Milan, which, compelled, entered into negotiations, while Matteo Visconti abdicated the lordship in favor of his son Galeazzo, dying shortly afterward (June 1322).
In 1323 B. succeeded in organizing a veritable crusade, and Monza, Alessandria, and Tortona had already fallen, when Louis the Bavarian intervened, bringing pressure to bear on the Ghibellines of Italy, especially Can Grande della Scala of Verona; with aid brought to Milan, B.'s fortune began to decline. B. then attempted a new enterprise against Bologna, which fell into his full power in 1324. He aimed to consolidate pontifical sovereignty in Emilia and Romagna, but the situation always remained precarious because of the cunning and insubordination of the local lords, until 1330. When in 1331 Cardinal B. had talks with John of Bohemia, Guelphs and Ghibellines united in a league, concerted at Castelbaldo (Padua), against the foreigner, and soon entered into struggle. The legate and John of Bohemia thought of resistance, but were defeated at Ferrara (April 1333), and an insurrection that broke out in Bologna caused the legate to flee (March 1334), who took refuge at Avignon, and brought the Italian enterprise to an unfortunate end. The rest of his life, after John XXII had died, passed obscure and unnoticed.
