BRORSON, HANS ADOLF. - Danish religious poet, b. at Randrup on 20 July 1694 and d. at Ribe on 3 June 1764. The son of a Protestant pastor, he was himself a pastor and, from 1741, bishop of Ribe.
His hymns constitute without doubt the best lyrical production in Denmark of the time, and not only for the sweetness of the rhythm and the extreme musicality of the verse. Written under the direct influence of German Pietism, they are an exaltation of the personal relationship that exists between God and the believer, and Jesus is often sung in them as the heavenly Bridegroom, not without a certain conventional sentimentality. A more personal note is given by certain allusions to the beauty of the Danish countryside and to the poet's daily life. Besides the Julesalmer (Christmas Hymns, 1732), we may recall: Troens rare Klenodien (Rare Jewels of the Faith, 1739), a collection of 274 hymns, 82 of which are original (the others are translations or reworkings from the German), and Swanesangen (Swan Song, 1765), a posthumous collection of 70 hymns, of a more personal and melancholy tone, often extolling death, desired by the poet as a liberation.
