BRUGSCH, HEINRICH KARL. – Egyptologist, born in Berlin on 18 February 1827 and died at Charlottenburg on 9 September 1894; he was granted the title of pasha in 1881. He was one of the few eminent scholars of Demotic Egyptian script.
B. devoted his entire life to the arduous work of decipherment. His publications marked an epoch in the field: Grammaire démotique (Berlin 1855); Geographische Inschriften, 3 vols. (Leipzig 1857–60); Histoire de l'Égypte (1st ed., there 1859; 2nd ed., there 1875); Recueil des monuments égyptiens (there 1862–85); and the truly monumental work, Hieroglyphisch-demotisches Wörterbuch, 7 vols. and supplement (there 1867–82). He founded the Zeitschrift für Ägypt. Sprache und Altertumskunde (1863).
