BRUGSCH, Heinrich Karl. — Egyptologist, born in Berlin on 18 Feb. 1827 and died in Charlottenburg on 9 Sept. 1894; he held the title of Pasha in 1881. He was one of the most eminent scholars of Egyptian demotic script.
Brugsch dedicated his entire life to the arduous work of decipherment. His publications marked an epoch in the field: *Grammaire démotique* (Berlin 1855); *Geographische Interpretationen*, 3 vols. (Leipzig 1857–60); *Histoire de l'Egypte* (1st ed., ibid. 1859; 2nd ed., ibid. 1875); *Recueil des monuments égyptiens* (ibid. 1862–85); and the truly monumental work, *Hieroglyphisch-demotisches Wörterbuch*, 7 vols. with supplement (ibid. 1867–82). He founded the *Zeitschrift für Ägyptische Sprache und Altertumskunde* (1863).
