BRUILLARD, PHILIBERT DE

BRUILLARD, Philibert de. – Bishop of Grenoble, b. at Dijon on 12 Sept. 1763, d. in his diocese on 17 Dec. 1860. After studies at the Collège de Navarre, he entered Saint-Sulpice and was ordained priest in Sept. 1789. Dispersed by the Revolution, the Sulpicians carried out parochial ministry in Paris, and on 18 Dec. 1826 he was named Bishop of Grenoble. His pastoral work was untiring, especially in propagating religious instruction and promoting catechesis. When the apparition at La Salette occurred in Sept. 1846, Mgr. B. approved it, and on 26 May 1852 he began construction of the grand basilica on the site of the apparition. In the same year he founded the Missionaries of La Salette. He resigned in December 1852.
