BRUILLARD, PHILIBERT de. – Bishop of Grenoble, born in Dijon on 12 September 1763, died in his diocese on 17 December 1860. After studying at the Collège de Navarre, he entered S. Sulpizio and was ordained a priest in September 1789. When the Sulpicians were dispersed by the Revolution, he exercised the parish ministry in Paris; then, on 18 December 1826, he was appointed bishop of Grenoble. His pastoral work was tireless, especially in spreading religious instruction and promoting catechism. When the apparition at La Salette took place in September 1846,
mona. B. approved it and on 26 May 1852 began the construction of the magnificent basilica at the site of the apparition. In the same year he founded the Missionaries of La Salette. He resigned in December 1852.
