Bruillard, Philibert de

BRUILLARD, PHILIBERT de. - Bishop of Grenoble, b. in Dijon on 12 Sept. 1763, d. in his diocese on 17 Dec. 1860. After his studies at the Collège de Navarre, he entered St. Sulpice and was ordained a priest in Sept. 1789. When the Sulpicians were dispersed by the Revolution, he exercised the parochial ministry in Paris, then on 18 Dec. 1826 he was appointed bishop of Grenoble. His pastoral work was tireless, especially in spreading religious instruction and in promoting the catechism. After the apparition to La Salette took place in Sept. 1846, mona. B. approved it and on 26 May 1852 began the construction of the grand basilica on the site of the apparition. In the same year he founded the Missionaries of La Salette. He resigned in December 1852.
