BRUGNATO. - In Liguria, in the province of Genoa. A Benedictine monastery flourished there, whose foundation is attributed to the Lombard king Liutprand, in honor of Sts. Peter, Lawrence and Columban; it received privileges from the popes Gregory III, John XIII and Benedict VII and from the Lombard kings Aistulf and Desiderius and from the emperors Charlemagne and his successors, from the three Ottos and from Henry II in 1014. Innocent II in 1133 suppressed the abbey and erected the diocese of B., raising the abbot Peter to bishop, and made it a suffragan of Genoa. Gregory IX united it to Noli, a union annulled in 1245 by Innocent IV; in 1787 a large part of the diocese was detached when Pius VI erected the episcopate of Pontremoli; in 1820 it was united aeque principaliter with the diocese of Luni (v.) and Sarzana.
