DESIDERIUS, King of the Lombards. - He came to the throne in 757 on the death of Aistulf, thanks to the promises made to Pope Stephen II to restore the conquests of the preceding years. He did not, however, make the restitution; on the contrary, on the death of Paul I in 768, he attempted to exert influence in Rome in the election of the successor, with the support of a faction that had formed in the city; having then gone to Rome in 777, he worked with Stephen III to eliminate the leaders of the faction opposed to him.

After Adrian I was elected pope, D. attempted a rapprochement with Charles, king of the Franks, with the aim of removing the protection that the papacy had from that quarter and that alone prevented him from securing the conquests of central Italy; and he attempted a new descent toward Rome. But Adrian persuaded King Charles to descend into Italy, and despite the difficulties raised by the Franks themselves, Charles, having crossed the Chiuse in 773, conquered northern Italy, besieged D. at Pavia, took him prisoner in June 774 and interned him together with his wife Anna in the monastery of Corbie, where he died shortly thereafter. Together with his wife, D. had been a great supporter of the monastic movement of his Kingdom. With D. the Lombard Kingdom passed under Frankish dominion.
