CARRÉ DE MALBERG, CAROLINE-BARBE, VENERABILE

CAROLINE-BARBE CARRÉ de MALBERG, VENERABLE. — Born Caroline-Barbe de Colchen in Metz on 8 April 1829, she married at the age of twenty Captain Paul C. de M., later Colonel, by whom she had four children, three of whom died in infancy. A soul of apostolic zeal, she brought her husband back to Christian practice and exerted a beneficial influence on all who frequented her. In agreement with her director, the Abbé Chaumont, she founded in 1872 the Society of the Daughters of St Francis de Sales (v.), a congregation dedicated to realizing in the world the pattern of Christian life proposed by St Francis de Sales in his Introduction to the Devout Life. She served as its first Superior General under the name Sister Jeanne de Chantal, giving a shining example of humble dedication and penance until her death on 28 January 1891 at Lorry-lès-Metz. Her cause of beatification was introduced on 23 June 1909 (AAS, I [1909], pp. 749–52).
