CARRON, GUY-TOUSSAINT-JULIEN. - Priest, ascetical writer, b. at Rennes on 23 February 1760, d. at Paris on 13 March 1821. He was, above all, a man of great action; in fact he founded at Rennes a factory of cloth for sails, thereby giving work to 2,000 poor people, and a refuge house for converted women. In exile at Jersey (1792) and at London (1796) for having refused to take the oath imposed by the Revolution, he opened there schools, pharmacies, libraries for the émigrés, and even, at London, a seminary. Having returned to Paris in 1815, he established there a boarding school for girls under the name of royal institute of St. Teresa. His very active life did not, however, prevent him from composing numerous ascetical works, among which: Pensées ecclésiastiques (4 vols., London 1800); L'ami des maurs ou lettres sur l'éducation (4 vols., ibid. 1805); Les confesseurs de la Foi dans l'Eglise gallicane à la fin du XVIIIe siècle (4 vols., Paris 1820).
