CARRIÈRE, Joseph. - Sulpician moralist, born at La Panouse-de-Cernon (diocese of Rodez) on 19 Feb. 1795, died at Lyons on 23 Apr. 1864. In 1818 he began his courses in moral theology, which were to bring him wide esteem and renown. In 1850 he was elected Superior General and held that office until his death.
A fruit of his teaching is especially the work: *Praelectiones theologicae maiores*: I, *De matrimonio* (Paris 1837); II, *De iustitia et iure* (ibid. 1839); III, *De contractibus* (3 vols., ibid. 1844–47). A valuable work for the clarity of its exposition, its abundant erudition, and the solidity of its doctrine, though here and there it betrays a certain rigorism. Always obedient to the directives of the Holy See, when some opinions on marriage that he held were not approved by it, he promptly revised them in subsequent editions.
