CARRIÈRE, JOSEPH. - Sulpician, moralist, b. at La Panouse-de-Cernon (diocese of Rodez) on 19 Feb. 1795, d. at Lyon on 23 Apr. 1864. In 1818 he began his courses in moral theology, which were to earn him wide esteem and renown. In 1850 he was elected superior general and remained in that office until his death.

The fruit of his teaching is especially the work: Praelectiones theologiae maiores: I, De matrimonio (Paris 1837); II, De iustitia et iure (ibid. 1839); III, De contractibus (3 vols., ibid. 1844-47). A work of value for the clarity of its exposition, its abundant erudition and the solidity of its doctrine, although here and there it betrays a certain rigorism. Always submissive to the directives of the Holy See, since he held on certain questions concerning marriage opinions not approved by it, he at once revised them in the subsequent editions.
