CATHERINE OF JESUS. - Discalced Carmelite, in the world C. de Nicolas, b. at Bordeaux on 5 April 1589, d. at Paris in the odour of sanctity on 19 February 1623. Anticipated by grace at the age of 8, she entered the Carmel of Paris (Faubourg St-Jacques) in 1608. Under the guidance of the venerable M. Magdalene of St. Joseph (M. Dubois de Fontaines) she made marvellous progress in perfection, and "the Lord raised her to so great and singular an interior life, that but few things can be said of her, because the greatest were hidden." Endowed with extraordinary favours, visions, ecstasies, revelations, prophecy, in continual union with God, she died "consumed by Him in soul and in spirit."
