CHANTEPIE DE LA SAUSSAYE, PIERRE-DANIEL - Historian of religions, b. at Leeuwarden (Holland) on 9 April 1848, d. at Bilthoven on 20 April 1920. From 1878 to 1899 he was a professor at the University of Amsterdam, whence he moved to that of Leiden, and remained there until 1916.
An advocate of the in-depth study of every religion, inasmuch as an ethical content subsists in each of them, he published in 1887 a Lehrbuch der Religionsgeschichte, the fourth edition of which was edited by A. Bertholet and E. Lehmann.
