CHANTEPIE DE LA SAUSSAYE, PIERRE-DANIEL – Historian of religions, born in Leeuwarden (the Netherlands) on 9 April 1848, died in Bilthoven on 20 April 1920. From 1878 to 1899 he was a professor at the University of Amsterdam, from which he moved to the University of Leiden, where he remained until 1916.
An advocate of the thorough study of every religion, insofar as each contains an ethical content, in 1887 he published a Lehrbuch der Religionsgeschichte, whose fourth edition was edited by A. Bertholet and E. Lehmann.
