CHEYENNE, DIOCESE of. - Capital of the State of Wyoming in the United States, it is a suffragan diocese of Denver in the State of Colorado. Its territory comprises the whole State of Wyoming (253,587 sq. km) and Yellowstone National Park.

In 1947, out of a population of 264,000 inhabitants, there were 40,083 Catholics, under the direction of 41 priests and 11 religious, with 66 churches, of which 26 were parish churches, 40 missions and 16 stations, 2 parish high schools (1 for Indians), and 1 orphanage. In 1947 there were 185 conversions. This territory initially formed part of the apostolic vicariate of Nebraska, then of the diocese of Omaha, created on 8 Oct. 1885, until on 2 Aug. 1887 it was erected as a suffragan diocese, first of St-Louis, then of Dubuque (15 June 1893), and finally, on 15 Nov. 1941, of Denver.
