COLLATION. - In ecclesiastical language, especially legal language, this term indicates primarily the second stage of the provision of an ecclesiastical office, that is, the conferral of the office (in the case of benefices one speaks of collatio tituli) upon the person who has been designated to become the holder of that office (v. PROVVISTA CANONICA); it is also used (but only in Latin: collatio) to indicate the rural deanery conferences (v. CONFERENZE), and to indicate the comparison of texts in a trial (collatio testium: v. TESTIMONI).
