COLLENBUSCH, SAMUEL

COLLENBUSCH, SAMUEL. — Pietist and Protestant mystic, born on 19 Sept. 1724 at Wichlinghausen (near Barmen in the Rhenish Prussia), physician at Duisburg (1756), then from 1784 at Schwellen and Barmen, where he died on 1 Sept. 1803. His doctrine bears the imprint of Oettinger, Bengel, and Fricker. Both at Duisburg and at Barmen he gathered followers around him for the study of the Bible in a Pietist sense. He exerted great influence on Protestant theology (the Hasenkamp brothers, Menken, Thomasius, Hofmann) and on their missionary work (Barmen Mission Institute).

Works: Erblührung biblischer Wahrheiten (2 vols., Barmen 1807–16 and Erlangen 1821); Auszüge aus dem Tagebuch (Stuttgart 1883).
