"AS IF," PHILOSOPHY of. - Title of the principal work of Hans Vaihinger (v.) and summary formula (als ob or also vie senn) of the interpretation of Kantian philosophy that he attempted. With this complicated conjunction Vaihinger wished to express precisely the so-called "method of fictions," which has, more or less, great importance in all the sciences, and to show the enormous role that the appearance of representations and judgments founded on false persuasions plays in the conception of the world and of life. A philosophy that he qualified as "positivist idealism."
