CRESCENS. - A Roman Cynic philosopher of the 2nd century. A windbag, immoral and greedy for money, fonder of popular applause than of the truth, he was a bitter enemy of the Christians, whom he fought even without fully knowing their doctrine, accusing them of atheism and impiety. In public disputes with St. Justin he was easily convicted of ignorance and vanity, but C. took revenge for the defeat at once by accusing his opponent before the prefect of Rome, who was condemned to death (ca. 165).
