CONSTANTIUS I (Flavius Valerius Constantinus), Roman Emperor, surnamed Chlorus. - Founder of the dynasty of the second Flavians, b. in Illyricum, d. at Eboracum (York) on 25 July 306. In 289 he was praetorian prefect under Maximian, whose stepdaughter Theodora he had married, by whom he had six children, while from his natural union with Helena, who probably professed the Christian faith or was inclined toward it, he had the future Constantine the Great. On 1 March 293 he was named Caesar in the tetrarchy established by Dio-clesian (De mortibus persecutorum, 14). Having become Augustus on 1 May 305, following the simultaneous abdication of Diocletian and Maximian, he continued the policy of peace toward the Christians. He fought again against the Picts and the Scots, but, of frail health, he died shortly afterward, leaving the administration of his provinces to his son Constantine.
