D'Amato, Giuseppe

D'AMATO, GIUSEPPE. - Barnabite, b. in Naples on 18 Sept. 1758, d. at Monlhà (Maumalach) in April 1832. A missionary, from 1783, in the kingdoms of Ava and Pegu, in Burma; a perfect connoisseur of the Pali language and of Burmese customs, he devoted himself among the natives as a physician and as a surgeon.

There was lost a Raccolta di 300 piante e fiori... etc., in 4 vols. fol. (2 of text and 2 of plates painted by himself) together with manuscripts on morals and on the sciences. A rich zoological museum of his passed to Captain Burney, his friend.
