« DOMARE CORDIS IMPETUS, ELISABETH »—Hymn of Matins for the feast of s. Elisabetta di Portogallo, probably composed by Urban VIII and introduced by him into the Breviary.
The acatalectic iambic trimeter departs from the usual metres of ecclesiastical hymns, and its form strongly reflects the classical inspiration then in vogue. The poet extols the wisdom of the saintly queen, who preferred to conquer the impulses of her heart in order to unite herself with God, whom to serve is truly to reign.
