DOMARE CORDIS IMPETUS, ELISABETH

DOMARE CORDIS IMPETUS, ELISABETH, - Hymn of Matins for the feast of St. Elizabeth of Portugal, probably composed by Urban VIII and introduced by him into the Breviary.

The meter, acatalectic iambic trimeter, stands apart from the usual meters of ecclesiastical hymns, and its form is strongly marked by the classical inspiration then in vogue. The poet extols the wisdom of the holy queen, who preferred to conquer the impulses of the heart in order to be united with God, whom to serve is truly to reign.
