DOUMÉ, APOSTOLIC VICARIATE OF. — In 1949, in order to intensify missionary propaganda in the eastern part of the Apostolic Vicariate of Yaoundé (French Cameroons), the new Apostolic Vicariate of D. was erected, comprising the two civil districts of the highlands.

The territory has an area of approximately 105,000 sq. km. with a population of 204,000, of whom 20,000 are Catholics and 11,000 are catechumens, served by about twenty priests. There are 8 residences, and another 3 or 4 will soon be opened to further strengthen the work of evangelization among the numerous pagans. It is noteworthy that the Apostolic Vicar of Yaoundé was simultaneously appointed Apostolic Vicar of D. and was given a Dutch auxiliary bishop, Saverio Paventi.
