DOUMÉ, APOSTOLIC VICARIATE. — In 1949, with the aim of making missionary propaganda more effective in the eastern area of the Apostolic Vicariate of Yaoundé (French Cameroon), the new Apostolic Vicariate of D. was erected, comprising the two civil districts of Upper Nyong and Lom and of Kadei. In this eastern area, the Dutch Fathers of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit had already been working for several years.
The territory has an area of approximately 105,000 sq. km., with 204,000 inhabitants, of whom 20,000 are Catholics and 11,000 catechumens, assisted by about twenty priests. There are 8 residences, and another 3 or 4 will be opened shortly in order to strengthen the work of evangelization among the numerous pagans ever more effectively. It should be noted that the Apostolic Vicar of Yaoundé was appointed at the same time Apostolic Vicar of D. and was given an auxiliary of Dutch nationality.
