Dubois, François-Clément-Théodore

DUBOIS, FRANÇOIS-CLÉMENT-THÉODORE. - Musician, b. at Rosnay on 24 Aug. 1837, d. in Paris on 11 June 1924. He won the first Prix de Rome, and was choirmaster first at St. Clotilde (1861) then at the Madeleine.

Professor of composition, then director at the Conservatoire (1896-1905). He is known above all for his vocal and orchestral works. The oratorios Les sept paroles du Christ and Le paradis perdu (1878) are among his most prized compositions. In 1899 he wrote Le baptême de Clovis, a Latin ode on a text by Pope Leo XIII, and in 1897 the symphonic poem Notre Dame de la mer. He also composed stage works.

D. is the author of a prized Treatise on Harmony (Paris 1921), which he composed after having first completed that of Réber.
