DUGUET, JACQUES-JOSEPH. - Jansenist theologian, b. at Montbrison, 9 Dec. 1649, d. at Paris, 25 Oct. 1733. An Oratorian, teacher of philosophy and positive theology, in 1685 he left the Congregation, drawn by Jansenist novelties, which he went on to spread in Brussels, where he became a friend of Arnauld and of Quesnel.

He wrote many exegetical works on the Old and New Testament according to the criteria set out in the Règles pour l'intelligence des Saintes Ecritures (Paris 1716), in which he indulges in the figurative and moral sense: Traité des scrupules (ibid. 1717); Conduite d'une dame chrétienne pour vivre saintement dans le monde (ibid. 1725). The following works are on the Index: Explication des qualités ou des caractères que st Paul donne à la charité (ibid. 1727; decree 11 Aug. 1745); Institution d'un prince ou traité des qualités, des vertus, des devoirs d'un souverain (Leiden 1739; decree 20 Nov. 1742).
