JACQUES-JOSEPH DUGUET. - Jansenist theologian, b. at Montbrison, 9 Dec. 1649, d. at Paris, 25 Oct. 1733. Oratorian, professor of philosophy and positive theology, in 1685 he left the Congregation, drawn to Jansenist novelties, which he went on to spread in Brussels, where he became a friend of Arnauld and Quesnel.
He wrote many works interpreting the Old and New Testaments according to the principles set out in his *Règles pour l'intelligence des Saintes Ecritures* (Paris 1716), in which he indulged in figurative and moral interpretations: *Traité des scrupules* (ibid. 1717); *Conduite d'une dame chrétienne pour vivre saintement dans le monde* (ibid. 1725). The following works were placed on the Index: *Explication des qualités ou des caractères que se Paul donne à la charité* (ibid. 1727); *decr. 11 Aug. 1745*; *Institution d'un prince ou traité des qualités, des vertus des devoirs d'un souverain* (Leiden 1739); *decreto 20 Nov. 1742*.
