COUSTURIER (SUTOR), PIERRE. - Carthusian theologian, b. at Chemiré le Roi ca. 1490, d. at Parc Sainte Marie (Le Mans), on 18 June 1537. Having become a religious, he was prior in various communities and visitor of the French province.

He began his literary activity with: De triplici connubio diuae Annae disceptatio (Paris 1523), followed by: De translatione Bibliae et navorum interpretationum reprobatione (ibid. 1524), which aroused the wrath of Erasmus of Rotterdam, for whom C. had had anything but kindly words. The polemic between the two went beyond the limits of a simple clash of ideas. From this period date the Anthropologia adversus quamdam Erasmi Apologiam (ibid. 1526) and the Apologetium adversus novos Antidiconarianitas (ibid. 1528), in which he exalts the Madonna against the Protestants. A polemicist by nature, he left Erasmus to attack Luther and his followers, writing: Apologia adversus Lutheri haeresim de votis monasticis (ibid. 1531); De potestate Ecclesiae in occultis (ibid. 1534). He had also written, in defense of his Order, De vita cartusiana libri duo (ibid. 1522).
