COUSTURIER (SUTOR), PIERRE. - Carthusian theologian, b. at Chemiré le Roi c. 1490, d. at Parc Sainte Marie (Le Mans), 18 June 1537. After entering religion, he served as prior in several communities and as visitor of the French province.
He began his literary activity with *De triplici connubio divae Annae disceptatio* (Paris 1523), followed by *De translatione Biblica et novarum interpretationum reprobatione* (ibid. 1524), which provoked the anger of Erasmus of Rotterdam, against whom Cousturier had not spared his harshest words. The controversy between the two exceeded the bounds of a mere clash of ideas. From this period date *Anthropologia adversus quamdam Erasmi Apologiam* (ibid. 1526) and *Apologeticum adversus novos Antidicomarianitas* (ibid. 1528), in which he defended the Virgin Mary against the Protestants. A polemicist by temperament, he then turned from Erasmus to attack Luther and his followers, writing *Apologia adversus Lutheri haeresim de votis monasticis* (ibid. 1531) and *De potestate Ecclesiae in occultis* (ibid. 1534). He had also written, in defense of his Order, *De vita cartusiana libri duo* (ibid. 1522).
