DULUTH, Diocese of. — A diocese and city in the State of Minnesota, United States of America, comprising the counties of Aitkin, Carlton, Cass, Cook, Crow Wing, Itasca, Lake, Pine, Koochiching, and St. Louis, with a territory of approximately 57,000 sq. km. in northeastern Minnesota.
In 1948, out of a population of 381,256, the diocese counted 87,950 Catholics served by 90 diocesan priests and 29 religious priests in 70 parishes, 24 chapels, 49 missions, and 25 stations, 5 colleges and *high schools*, and 18 parochial schools.
In 1946, there were 208 conversions. The diocese has 6 male religious orders and 5 female religious orders.
D., founded in the 17th century by Daniel Greysolon du Luth, a French officer from whom it took its name, was incorporated as a city only in 1857. On October 3, 1889, it became the seat of a separate diocese, detached from the Apostolic Vicariate of Northern Minnesota, which in turn had been separated in 1875 from the Diocese of St. Paul, of which D. has been a suffragan since its foundation.
