DULUTH, Diocese of. - Diocese and city of the State of Minnesota, in the United States of America, it comprises the counties of Aitkin, Carlton, Cass, Cook,

Crow Wing, Itasca, Lake, Pine, Koochiching and St. Louis, with a territory of about 57,000 sq km in northeastern Minnesota.

In 1948, out of 381,256 inhabitants the diocese counted 87,950 Catholics directed by 90 secular priests and 29 religious in 70 parishes, 24 chapels, 49 missions and 25 stations, 5 colleges and High schools, 18 parochial schools.

In 1946 there were 208 conversions. In the diocese there are 6 male religious Orders and 5 female.

Luth, a French officer from whom it took its name, was incorporated as a city only in 1857, becoming on 3 Oct. 1889 the seat of a diocese separated from the apostolic vicariate of northern Minnesota, in turn detached in 1875 from the diocese of St. Paul of which D. has been a suffragan since its foundation.
