DUMAS, ALEXANDRE (PADRE)

DUMAS, Alexandre (Father). - Novelist and playwright, b. at Villers-Cotterets on 24 July 1803, d. at Puys (Dieppe) on 5 Dec. 1870. He left as many as 257 volumes of novels and 25 of plays, for the most part worked out by his secretaries. His novels, with no historical fidelity and of a popular type, rich in adventures, in characters that have remained famous, such as Les trois mousquetaires, devoid of any profound thought and of any morality, indeed often reflecting the cynicism of the author, were all placed on the Index of Prohibited Books (Decree of 22 June 1863).
