CLÉMENT, FRANÇOIS. - Born at Bèze in 1714, died on 29 March 1793 in Paris, he was called a Maurist Benedictine; he devoted his life to historical studies and, on the commission of his Order, wrote vols. XI and XII of the Histoire littéraire de la France. He edited the 2nd and 3rd eds., far superior to that of Maur Dantine (or D'Antine), of the Art de vérifier les dates des faits historiques (1783-87), which he supplemented, adding to it also the pre-Christian period.
