CLEMENT, FRANÇOIS

CLEMENT, François. - Born at Bèze in 1714, died on 29 March 1793 in Paris, was a learned Benedictine of the Maurist congregation; he devoted his life to historical studies and, at the request of his Order, wrote volumes XI and XII of the *Histoire littéraire de la France*. He edited the 2nd and 3rd editions, much superior to that of Maur Dantine (or D’Antine), of the *Art de vérifier les dates des faits historiques* (1783–87), which he expanded to include the pre-Christian period.
