CLÉMENT, FRANÇOIS. — Born in Bèze in 1714, he died on 29 March 1793 in Paris; he was called a Maurist Benedictine. He devoted his life to historical studies and, commissioned by his Order, wrote volumes XI and XII of the Histoire littéraire de la France. He edited the 2nd and 3rd editions, much superior to that of Maur Dantine (or D’Antine), of the Art de vérifier les dates des faits historiques (1783–87), which he supplemented, also adding the pre-Christian period.
