DAUDET, LÉON. - Writer and politician, son of Alphonse, b. in Paris on 16 Nov. 1867, d. at St-Rémy (Paris) on 30 June 1942.

A follower of E. Drumont, the initiator of antisemitism in France, and then of E. Vaugeois, a supporter of monarchical nationalism, he was chief editor, from the very beginning, of the newspaper L'action française, which he then directed together with Maurras. He was a deputy for Paris from 1919 to 1924. Imprisoned for defamation in 1927, D. managed to escape from prison and take refuge in Belgium, where in 1930 he was reached by a pardon from the president of the Republic. From 1900 he was a member of the Académie Goncourt. He wrote works of psychology and medicine, of criticism and of politics. Of his novels, infected more or less all with sensualism, the following are on the Index: Le voyage de Shakespeare (decree of 14 Dec. 1927) and Les bacchantes (decree of 17 Feb. 1932).
