REMIGIUS, Bishop of Reims, Saint. - He is commemorated in the Hieronymian Martyrology on 15 January, in the Roman Martyrology on 13 January, and in the historical martyrologies of the diocese on 1 October, but the true "dies natalis" remains unknown.

Born in 439 of a noble family, he was educated at Reims. Still young, he was elected bishop and governed the diocese for over 70 years, working chiefly for the conversion of the barbarians. As soon as Clovis ascended the throne of the Franks (481), he wrote him a letter urging him to govern with moderation, and at Christmas in 496 he baptized him together with many of his subjects. He died around 530 and was buried in the church of St. Christopher, which afterwards took its name from him.

There survive from R. some letters (MGH, Epist., III, pp. 113-16) and his testament in two recensions, one of which is interpolated. His biography was written by Hincmar around 878 but with legendary details; another, older and shorter one, attributed to Venantius Fortunatus, is likewise unreliable.
