REMIGIO, bishop of Reims, saint. — He is commemorated in the *Martyrologium Hieronymianum* on 15 January, in the Roman Martyrology on 13 January, and in medieval historical martyrologies on 1 October; however, the true *dies natalis* remains unknown.
Born in 439 from a noble family, he was educated in Reims. Even as a young man he was elected bishop and governed the diocese for more than 70 years, devoting himself principally to the conversion of the barbarians. Soon after the accession of Clovis, king of the Franks (481), he wrote him a letter urging him to govern with moderation, and at Christmas 496 he baptized him together with many of his subjects. He died about 530 and was buried in the church of St Christopher, which later took its name from him.
Some letters of R. remain (*MGH, Epist.*, III, pp. 113–16) as well as his will in two versions, one of which is interpolated. His biography was written by Hincmar about 878, but it contains legendary elements; another, older and shorter, attributed to Venantius Fortunatus, is likewise unreliable.
