REMIGIO, bishop of REIMS, saint. - He is commemorated in the Hieronymian Martyrology on 15 Jan., in the Roman on the 13th, and in the medieval historical martyrologies on 1 Oct.; however, the true «dies natalis» remains unknown.
Born in 439 into a noble family, he was educated at Reims. While still young he was elected bishop and governed the diocese for more than 70 years, chiefly devoting himself to the conversion of the barbarians. As soon as Clodoveo ascended the throne of the Franks (481), he wrote him a letter urging him to govern with moderation, and at Christmas 496 he baptized him together with many of his subjects. He died about 530 and was buried in the church of S. Cristoforo, which subsequently took his name.
There survive from R. several letters (MGH, Epist., III, pp. 113-16) and the testament in two versions, one of them interpolated. His biography was written by Incmaro about 878, but contains legendary material; another, earlier and shorter, attributed to Venanzio Fortunato, is likewise of little reliability.
