REMIGIUS, Archbishop of Lyon. - Chaplain of the emperor Lothair and of King Charles of Provence, archbishop of Lyons in 852, he obtained, through the favor he enjoyed with the princes, the restitution of the properties of which the Church of Lyons and various monasteries had been despoiled in the preceding wars.
He took an energetic part in the affair of Gottschalk, who had rekindled the controversy over predestination and for this was treated with excessive rigor by Hincmar of Reims. The two replies to Hincmar on the part of the Church of Lyons: the Liber de tribus epistolis and the Absolutio quaestionis de generali per Adam damnatione attributed to R. (PL 121, 985-1084) seem instead to be attributable to the deacon Florus (Revue bénédictine, 42 [1930], pp. 149-62). The importance of R. appears in the Councils of Valence (855), of Langres and of Savonnières (859), in which the Augustinian double predestination was defended against the theses of Hincmar and of Scotus Eriugena, as well as in the Council of Thuzey (860), which put an end to the controversy. Having died on 28 Oct. 875, he was buried in the church of St. Justus; in 1287 he was transferred to the Cathedral; his remains were dispersed during the wars of religion. His feast is, in the Breviary of Lyons of 1692, on 26 Oct., and is now assigned to the 29th.
