REMIGIO, archbishop of LIONE. - Chaplain to Emperor Lotario and King Carlo of Provenza, archbishop of Lione in 852, he obtained, through the favor he enjoyed with the princes, the restoration of the property of which the Church of Lione and several monasteries had been despoiled in the preceding wars.
He took an energetic part in the affair of Godescalco, who had rekindled the controversy over predestination and was consequently treated with excessive rigor by Incmaro of Reims. The two replies to Incmaro on the part of the Church of Lione—the Liber de tribus epistolis and the Abso-lutio quaestionis de generali per Adam damuntione attribu-ted to R. (PL 121, 985-1084)—seem rather to be attributable to the deacon Floro (Revue bénédictine, 42 [1930], pp. 149-62). R.'s importance is apparent in the Councils of Valenza (855), Langres, and Savonnière (859), in which the Augustinian doctrine of double predestination was defended against the theses of Incmaro and Scoto Eriugena, as also in the Council of Thuzey (860), which put an end to the controversy. Having died on 28 Oct. 875, he was buried in the church of S. Giusto; in 1287 he was transferred to the Cathedral; his remains were dispersed during the wars of religion. His feast is given in the Breviary of Lione of 1692 as 26 Oct., but is now observed on the 29th.
