REMIGIO de' GIROLAMI. — Dominican theologian, born in Florence in 1235, died there in 1319. He studied in Paris, where s. Tommaso d'Aquino was his teacher; he taught for 42 years at the convent of S. Maria Novella in Florence and counted Dante Alighieri among his pupils. Twice prior (1294, 1313) of the Florentine convent, he was also superior of the Roman province (1309–11). He perhaps lectured on the Sentences in Paris (1284–1285), where he was promoted to master in 1303. A sought-after counsellor, he served several times as ambassador of the Republic.
He left poems in Latin and in the vernacular, many sermons, and various treatises on philosophy and dogmatic and moral theology. Almost all his works are still unpublished (Florence, Biblioteca nazionale). The following are noteworthy: Quaestiones theologicae per alphabetum (the question Determinatio de uno esse in Christo was printed by M. Grabmann in Miscellanea Thomista, Barcelona 1925, pp. 257–77); Contra falsos Ecclesiae professores (an original apologetic synthesis, of interest for the history of culture); De misericordia; De iustitia; De contrarietate peccati; De peccato usurae; De bono pacis; De bono communi. Everywhere R. displays a profound attachment and sincere devotion to the doctrine of the Aquinate.
