RICCARDO DI CLUNY (DI POITIERS)

From his works it can be inferred that he was a monk in the Cluniac priory of the Île d’Aix near Rochefort. A journey to England between 1143 and 1154 inspired him greatly, as shown in his poems, but his principal work is a universal chronicle from the Creation to 1171. It is a compilation of earlier chronicles, which later served Martin of Troppau (*Chronicon Pontificum et Imperatorum*) and Bernard Gui (*Flores chronicorum*); three different redactions are known, ending respectively in 1153, 1162, and 1171; the last, revised by a different hand, was continued to 1174. In addition, there survive a *Catalogue of the Roman Pontiffs* from the Apostle Peter to Alexander III, with inserted notices on the abbots of Cluny, and a chronicle of Aunis, which in the mournful style of the prophets recounts the destruction of Châtel-Aillon.
