PETER OF THURY. - Cardinal, b. in Burgundy in the second half of the 14th century, d. probably around 9 Dec. 1410. Doctor in utroque. He was custodian of the church of Lyon and referendary at the court of Charles VI when he was appointed bishop of Maillezais on 2 May 1382.

Attached to the court of France in Jan. 1389; as legate and counsellor, he accompanied Louis II of Anjou to the Kingdom of Naples in July 1390. Having returned to Avignon in June 1392, he took part on 28 Sept. 1394 in the election of Peter of Luna (Benedict XIII), but declared himself against him when the latter was deprived of authority, in July 1398. He took part in the Council of Pisa in 1409. Alexander V, elected in that Council, appointed him in Nov. 1409 vicar general and legate of Avignon and of the Comtat Venaissin. His letters and his memoirs, addressed especially to the court of France and to the University of Paris, reveal the part he played in limiting the Western Schism.
