of Metz, coveted by the partisans of Urban VI. He took possession of his see in April 1385 with the help of the armed intervention of Valeran, but because of internal difficulties and political rivalries he was unable to keep it. Created cardinal deacon of S. Giorgio in Velabro (15 April 1384), he was summoned to the court of Avignon in the summer of 1386. For reasons of health he moved to Villeneuve-les-Avignon, where he died. He was distinguished for his austerities, his profound humility and his charity toward the poor; he was also buried, in accordance with his wish, in the paupers' cemetery of S. Michele d'Avignone, then (1395) at S. Pietro Celestino. Clement VII, on 9 June 1527, permitted P. to be venerated as blessed, until his canonization should be reached (v., vol. III, coll. 587-88).
