PIETRO di LUSSEMBURGO, blessed. – Cardinal, born in Ligny-en-Barrois (Meuse department) on 20 July 1369, died in Villeneuve-les-Avignon on 2 July 1387.

of Metz, coveted by the partisans of Urbanus VI. He took possession of his see in April 1385 with the assistance of Valeran’s armed intervention, but owing to internal difficulties and political rivalries he was unable to retain II. Created cardinal deacon of S. Giorgio in Velabro (15 April 1384), he was summoned to the court of Avignon in the summer of 1386. For reasons of health he moved to Villeneuve-les-Avignon, where he died. He distinguished himself by his austerities, profound humility, and charity toward the poor; in accordance with his wishes, he was also buried in the cemetery of the poor of S. Michele d'Avignone, and later (1395) at S. Pietro Celestino. On 9 June 1527, Clemente VII permitted P. to be venerated as blessed, pending his canonization (v. , vol. III, cols. 587–88).
