RICHARD OF CNAPWELL (AND NOT OF CLAPWELL). - English Dominican theologian, one of the first to introduce Thomism at Oxford, between 1284 and 1286, not without lively opposition from his confrere Robert of Kilwardby (v.) and from the Franciscan John Pecham (v.).

Author of a Quodlibet and of some Quaestiones disputatae, he declared himself in favor of the Thomistic doctrine of the unity of the substantial form in man, over which a fierce and clamorous debate was raging in those years; condemned as a heretic by Pecham, he left England for Bologna, where he died in 1288. It seems certain that the Correctorium "Quare" is to be attributed to him, in response to the Correctorium fratris Thomae of William de la Mare.
