GUGLIELMO de la MARE. - Franciscan philosopher and theologian, d. 1298. He taught at Oxford; he is the author of a Commentary on the Sentences (which, however, includes only the first two books), and of Quaestiones disputatae: both works are still unpublished. He is known above all for his Correctorium fratris Thomae, which collects, under 118 headings, Thomistic theses and follows each with a refutation conducted from the Bonaventurian standpoint.
The Correctorium became an almost official text in the Franciscan Order after the General Chapter of Strasbourg in 1282 and, it might be said, an almost equally official target of Thomistic counterattacks. One such counterattack (which bore the title of Correctoria and attributed to the work of G. de la M. that of Corruptorium), the Correctorium corruptorii «Quare», transcribes G.’s passages one by one and follows them with a defense of St. Thomas, so that in this Thomistic counterattack (of which we possess a critical edition) we may also find the text of G. de la M.
G. faithfully follows the doctrine of St. Bonaventura; indeed, Longpré maintains that his commentary on the Sentences is in fact a commentary on St. Bonaventura’s Commentary.
