CORRECTORIA. — Polemical writings by Franciscans and Dominicans concerning the doctrine of s. Thomas during the 25 years after his death.
The Franciscan Guglielmo de la Mare identified in his Correctorium fratris Thomae (1278) 118 propositions from various works of the Aquinate, which he rejected by opposing Thomistic Aristotelianism with the solutions of traditional Augustinianism. The Dominicans called this work Corruptorium and opposed it, in defense of the doctrine of s. Thomas, with various works entitled Correctorium corruptorii. There was also a Franciscan reply to one of them. This literature of the c. is of considerable value for the historical knowledge of the philosophical doctrines proper to s. Thomas and to the first Thomistic school.
Guglielmo’s work appears in three forms, indicating successive elaboration: 1) the Declarations, a brief censure of 60 articles, capable of being written in the margins of the works of s. Thomas; 2) the Correctorium of 118 articles, published together with the c. Quare (v. below); 3) an expanded revision of this, which increases the number of articles from 109 (excluding the 9 against the Comm. on the Sentences) to 138. The Dominican replies, all of which refer to the Correctorium in its second form, are: 1) the c. Quare (ed. P. Glorieux, in Bibl. thomiste, IX, Kain 1927), probably written by Riccardo Clapwell (according to Pelster, by Tommaso di Sutton), shortly after Guglielmo’s work; 2) the c. Circa (ed. J. P. Muller [Studia Anselmiana, 12-13], Roma 1941), by Giovanni Quidort of Paris, written in the years 1282–84, incomplete; 3) the c. Sciendum by Roberto di Colletorto; 4) the c. Quaestione (incomplete), by an author not yet determined, still unpublished; 5) the Apologeticum veritatis contra Corruptorium (ed. J. P. Muller [Studi e Testi, 108], Città del Vaticano 1944), by Ramberto de' Primadizzi of Bologna, composed in 1287–99, in which, within the framework of Guglielmo’s writing, antinomic arguments of Enrico di Gand and Egidio Romano are discussed.
