STUDIES AND TEXTS. - A series of texts and studies published under the care of the writers of the Vatican Library (from 1929, also of the archivists of the Secret Archive).
It began in 1900 through the initiative of Fr. Fr. Ehrle, Prefect of the Library. Although primarily intended to disseminate unpublished texts from the Vatican manuscripts and to include original works based on them, the series later welcomed authors from outside the Library as well as editions or studies unrelated to its codices. After fifty-two years, the collection, now numbering over 170 volumes, encompasses the Western and Eastern worlds, secular and ecclesiastical literatures, and the fields of philological and historical sciences.
Among the editions to be noted are: Pappus and Theon of Alexandria, George Pachymeres, Pachymeres for the Basils, the Book of Agatangelos, Nilus Cabasilas, Ramberto de' Pirimidizzi, Vacarius, Cardinal Giovanni Bona, Constantine Forfregonito, Venturino de' Prioribus, Torquato Tasso, the Book of the Ascension (in several medieval versions), Arabic, Mandaean, and Turkish texts. Biblical exegesis and ancient Christian literature are represented by works of Cardinals G. Mercati and E. Tisserant, publications by R. Devreesse on Theodore of Mopsuestia and the Constantiniana by P. Franchi de' Cavalieri; hagiography is represented by the Hagiographical Notes (9 fascicles) by the latter.
U. Monneret de Villard, The Oriental Legends of the Evangelical Magi; F. Lanzoni, Genesis, Development, and Decline of Historical Legends; liturgy is represented by M. Andrieu, *Histoire du pontifical romain au moyen âge*; I. M. Hanssens, *Amarilii episcopi opera liturgica omnia*. Major works include M. Vattasso, *Initia patrum* from the *Patrologia Latina*; the Miscellanea in honor of Monsignor A. Mercati, by Cardinals F. Ehrle and G. Mercati; the collected minor works of the latter; and G. Graf, *Geschichte der christlichen arabischen Literatur* (5 vols.).
Ecclesiastical history is represented by works such as F. Lanzoni, *Le diocesi d'Italia...*; M. H. Laurent, *Le bienheureux Innocent V.*; J. Rouët de Journel, *Nomenclatures de Russie* (4 vols.), and also by the *Rationes decimarum Italiae* in the 13th and 14th centuries (13 vols.) with geographical maps. Before this series by the archivists of the Vatican Secret Archive, they had begun in 1926 the series *Sussidi per la consultazione dell'Archivio Vaticano* (3 vols. to date).
Several volumes are dedicated to inventories of libraries or archives (P. Guidi, H. Hoberg) and especially to the manuscripts of the Vatican Library (U. Cassuto, G. Levi della Vida, A. Maier, E. Rossi, A. Wilmart). Many volumes often illustrate, through unpublished texts and correspondence, Italian literati and humanists. Notable also are St. Kuttner, *Repertorium der Kanonistik*, and publications on palaeography, Latin-Italian glossaries (by P. Sella), municipal statutes, and ancient inventories.
