STUDI E TESTI. - A series of texts "published under the care of the writers of the Vatican Library" (in 1929 there was added "and of the archivists of the Secret Archive").
They began in 1900, through the work of Fr. Fr. Ehrle, prefect of the Library. Although intended principally to make known unpublished texts, offered by the Vatican manuscripts, and to welcome original works based on them, authors outside the Library were later also hosted in the series, as well as editions or studies not drawn from its codices. In the collection, rich after fifty-two years with more than 170 volumes, the Western and Eastern worlds are represented, as are profane and ecclesiastical literatures, and philological and historical sciences.
Among the editions mention should be made of: Pappus and Theon of Alexandria, George Pachymeres, Patzes for the Basilica, the book of Agathangelos, Nilus Cabasilas, Ramberto de' Primadizzi, Vacarius, Cardinal Giovanni Bona, Constantine Porphyrogenitus, Venturino De Prioribus, T. Tasso, the Libro della Scala in several medieval versions, Arabic, Mandaean and Turkish texts. To biblical exegesis and ancient Christian literature belong works of Cardinals G. Mercati and E. Tisserant, publications by R. Devreesse on Theodore of Mopsuestia and the Constantinian texts of P. Franchi de' Cavalieri; to hagiography, the Note agiografiche (9 fascicles) of the latter,
U. Monneret de Villard, the Leggende orientali sui Magi evangelici, F. Lanzoni, Genesi, svolgimento e tramonto delle Leggende storiche; to liturgy M. Andrieu, Histoire du pontifical romain au moyen âge; I. M. Hanssens, Amalarii episcopi opera liturgica omnia. Works of great value are M. Vattasso, Initia patrum della Pl., the Miscellanee in honor of Mons. A. Mercati, of Cardinals F. Ehrle and G. Mercati, the collection of the minor works of the latter, and G. Graf, Geschichte der christl. arab. Literatur (5 vols.).
For ecclesiastical history, represented by works such as F. Lanzoni, Le diocesi d'Italia..., M. H. Laurent, Le bienheureux Innocent V, J. Rouët de Journel, Nonsautures de Russie (4 vols.), the Rationes decimorum Italiae in the 13th and 14th centuries (13 vols.) with geographical maps also serve. Before this series of the archivists of the Vatican Secret Archive, they had begun, in 1926, the series Sussidi per la consultazione dell'Archivio Vaticano (so far 3 vols.).
Several volumes are devoted to inventories of libraries or archives (P. Guidi, H. Hoberg) and especially to the manuscripts of the Vatican Library (U. Cassuto, G. Levi della Vida, A. Maier, E. Rossi, A. Wilmart). Many often illustrate, with unpublished texts and correspondence, Italian men of letters and humanists. Finally, mention should be made of St. Kuttner, Repertorium der Kanonistik, and publications on paleography, on Latin-Italian glossaries (by P. Sella), on municipal statutes, and on ancient inventories.
