LIEBAERT, PAUL. - Palaeographer, b. at Courtrai (Belgium), 24 Sept. 1883; d. at Pallanza, 25 Aug. 1915. Doctor of philosophy and theology, graduate of the Vatican School of Palaeography and Diplomatics, assistant honorary scribe of the Vatican Library, he promised to become a second Mabillon, in the judgment of Wallace Martin Lindsay.
With his rich collection of plates of illuminated manuscripts, bequeathed to the Vatican Library, he was preparing a publication on Western miniatures, a work taken up and brought to completion by Albert Boeckler, Abendländische Miniaturen bis zum Ausgang des Mittelalters (Berlin 1930).
Worth noting (in collaboration with Fr. Ehrle): Specimina codicum latinorum Vaticanorum (Bonn 1912; 2nd ed., Berlin 1930); Artistes Flamands en Italie pendant la Renaissance, in Bulletin de l'Institut historique belge de Rome, 1 (1919), pp. 1-103. A posthumous publication of four studies remained unpublished.
