LIEBAERT, PAUL. - Paleographer, b. at Courtrai (Belgium), 24 Sept. 1883, d. at Pallanza, 25 Aug. 1915. Doctor of philosophy and theology, graduate of the Vatican School of Paleography and Diplomatics, honorary adjunct writer of the Vatican Library, he promised to be a second Mabillon, in the judgment of Wallace Martin Lindsay.
With his rich collection of plates of illuminated manuscripts, left to the Vatican Library, he was preparing a publication on Western miniatures, a work later taken up and completed by Albert Boeckler, Abendmännliche Miniaturen bis zum Ausgang des Mittelalters (Berlin 1930).
Noteworthy (in collaboration with Fr. Ehrle): Specimina codicum latinorum Vaticanorum (Bonn 1912; 2nd ed., Berlin 1930); Artistes Flamands en Italie pendant la Renaissance, in Bulletin de l'Institut historique belge de Rome, I (1919), pp. 1-103. A posthumous publication of four studies remained unpublished.
