LIDWINA (Lidwige), Blessed. - Born at Schiedam (Holland) in 1380, died there on 14 April 1433. Even as a very small child she gave signs of a special devotion to Mary; at the age of 12 she refused proposals of marriage, praying God to take away her beauty; this God granted her through an interminable series of illnesses which from her 15th year until her death tormented her, making her an unsurpassable example of patience. At the same time extraordinary mystical phenomena occurred in her, such as total abstinence from food (she received only the Most Holy Eucharist) and from sleep, and furthermore visions, raptures, miracles, the emanation of perfumes, etc. Her cult was confirmed by Leo XIII on 14 May 1890.
