FRANCISCAN STUDIES. - National scientific journal of the Friars Minor of Italy.
It began publication on 1 June 1903 under the title La Verna. Rivista illustrata sanfrancescana, through the work of Fr. Mengoni (v.) and with a programmatic letter by Giuseppe Toniolo; its headquarters were at Rocca S. Casciano (Forlì). In June 1911 the editorial direction was transferred to Sargiano (Arezzo), and in 1914 the second series began under the title S. F., già la Verna; the original heading was retained for the Bollettino mensile del Terz'ordine ed Antoniano.
With the exception of the period of the First World War, a gap filled by a « bridge issue » (1915-20), the journal appeared regularly. In 1929 the third series began, and it became the Rivista nazionale edited by the Friars Minor of Italy.
The journal publishes articles, texts and documents, reviews, and news concerning the Italian Franciscan intellectual movement. Important were the various « special issues » published for the centenaries of the donation of La Verna by Count Orlando di Chiusi (1913), of the Franciscan Third Order (1921), of the Stigmata (1924), of the death of St. Francesco (1926), of St. Antonio (1931), and of St. Bernardino da Siena (1945).
In 1949, alongside the journal, a series was begun under the title Biblioteca di studi francescani, comprising monographs, texts, and wide-ranging studies. Three volumes have appeared: G.
