RAYMOND SEBOND (DE SEBIUDA). - Spanish physician, philosopher and theologian, he taught at Toulouse, where he died on 29 April 1436.
At Toulouse, in the last two years of his life, he composed the Liber creaturarum, printed around 1484 under the title Theologia naturalis. In this work, inspired by the doctrine of Raymond Lull (v.), the author seeks to teach man to read in the two books that God himself has placed before him: the book of nature and Sacred Scripture. Both of these books give man certain knowledge, easy to acquire in a short time, concerning his origins and his destiny, and render every other science useless. On account of certain bold assertions, the prologue of the work was censured by the Council of Trent and was suppressed in later editions. Because of the exaltation of experience (v.) found in it and the discredit it casts on the method of Scholasticism, the work attracted the attention of M. Montaigne (v.), who made it the object of an extensive exposition and an apology in the famous chapter 12 of book II of his Essais.
