ROGER OF MARSTON. - English Franciscan, philosopher and theologian, b. a little before the middle of the 13th century, d. at Norwich ca. 1303. A student in Paris between 1269 and 1272, he taught at Oxford (1277), then in 1285 at Cambridge. He governed the Franciscan province of England from 1292 to 1298.
He left four Quodlibeta and some Quaestiones disputatae. R. di M., by his doctrine on divine illumination and on the agent intellect, shows that he had undergone the influence, more than of Bonaventure, of Roger Bacon (v.) and of William of Auvergne (v.). Gilson sees in this doctrine a case of Avicennizing Augustinianism. Recently his theory, of Augustinian inspiration, on the species intentionales has also been brought to the fore, tending to affirm the essential activity of the cognitive act. He reproaches St. Thomas for giving too much weight to the arguments of the philosophers in order to demonstrate the immortality of the soul, which is a certainty only for Christian wisdom.
