REMIGIUS, Archbishop of Rouen. - Natural son of Charles Martel, educated at court, he succeeded Rainfroi in the archbishopric of Rouen around 754-55.

After a mission entrusted to him by his brother Pepin the Short to Paul I, in 760, he introduced at Rouen, following the example of St. Chrodegang at Metz, the Roman chant and liturgical customs later extended, by royal decree, to the whole "Frankish" Church. Sent to Desiderius, king of the Lombards, he asked for the restitution of the patrimony of St. Peter. It is also believed that he had been charged with bringing the body of St. Benedict back from Fleury (St-Benoît-sur-Loire) to Montecassino, but he would have been prevented from doing so, according to the legend, by a miraculous event. Having died at Rouen around 771-72, he was buried in the Cathedral, from which his body was transferred, under Charles the Bald, to St. Medard of Soissons, then in 1090 to St-Ouen of Rouen, where it disappeared in the sack of the abbey by the Huguenots. Bishop François I de Harlay inserted his name and feast (19 Jan.) into the Breviary of Rouen of 1627.
