QUIRINUS, saint, martyr - Altar of the «platonia» built above the tomb of St. Q. with Cosmatesque reworkings and those of Cardinal Scipione Borghese (early 17th century) - Rome, cemetery of St. Sebastian.
QUIRINUS, Saint, Martyr. - Bishop of Siscia (Sissek) in Pannonia, he suffered martyrdom in the persecution of Diocletian. According to the Passio (BHL, 7035), a stone would have been hung around his neck and, led to the top of a bridge, he would have been thrown into the river. He was buried at Savaria (Stein-am-Anger) near the gate "Scarabatensis."
When the barbarians invaded Pannonia, the fleeing Christians carried his body to Rome and laid it in a mausoleum behind the basilica of St. Sebastian on the Via Appia, commonly known under the name of Platonia (v. CATACUMBAS, CIMITERO IN): a building of irregular shape, constructed at the end of the 4th century and the beginning of the 5th, in which in 1893 a mutilated inscription was discovered, with the name of Q., falsely attributed at that time to Pope Damasus. Q. is mentioned by St. Jerome (Chronicon, at the year 312); Prudentius dedicated a poem to him (Peristephanon, VII); he is commemorated in the Hieronymian Martyrology on 4 June and by all the Itineraries of the pilgrims of the 7th century.
