ÉCATÉ. - Minor divinity of Greek religion; according to some, of Carian origin. Homer does not know her; Hesiod calls her daughter of the Titan Perses and of Asteria, sister of Leto; protectress of men and of all their activities, she gives victory and honors in war and in contests, she is the protectress of women, of horsemen, shepherds and fishermen. In these thus extensive functions one must perhaps see the Orphic influence.
She had a widespread cult: famous sanctuaries were those of Aegina and of Argos; in Athens she had a cult on the Acropolis. She was very popular as one of the spirits and of the spectres, identified with Artemis and Persephone and connected with the underworld (v. CTORICHE, DIVINITÀ). As an infernal goddess she was invoked by sorcerers for magical actions and incantations.
